Is New Mexico in America?

Well, tomorrow I'm off to "The Land of Enchantment". Yesterday, being Mother's Day, I called my 94 year old Mum to wish her a happy Mother's Day. During the conversation I told her I was leaving for New Mexico on Tuesday, and I'd be back Sunday.

She then said: "As your aware, during the "War" I worked as a nurses aid and I worked with a woman who was a nurse, and she was from New Mexico." "We became quite good friends." "She was born and raised in New Mexico, but she was an American though."

I chuckled to myself and thought another "momism" to file away. Priceless.

Define "America".

When I moved here in '75 my MIL asked if they spoke English here, because she knew my Wife could not. And they walk among us.

Should have read Spanish. But most native New Mexican, South of US 40 speak Mexican, N.of 40 they speak Spanish. And most are ahead of us cause they are bi-lingual. :-P

I may have assumed that the woman she befriended was her age or younger. Given that my mother was born in 1920 she would have been in her early twenties during the war. The woman she befriended could easily have been older than her, perhaps quite a bit older. We know that New Mexico was granted statehood in 1912. The woman could have quite easily been of an age in which she was born and raised in New Mexico before it was granted statehood, and thus my mother's qualification.
I'll have to speak to my Mom and see if she remembers the woman's age.

I have several friends whose GrandParents came over the caprocks in covered wagons to settle here in the Pecos River valley.
Everything outhere is an antique if its over 50 years old. And cars sitting out in the open 25 years don't rust. No humidity. FWIW :-P

Low humidity would be a nice change. I live in AL and with

That is the reason that on their license plates it is written New Mexico USA. Then again about half of the people in the United States do not know who the President is.
