375 shooters

I am wondering what is the velocity range most shoot for with 300gr bullets? I have the Ruger version, but I know there are H&H, and Weatherby shooters on here. I am waiting on a new bullet mold that will let me cast 350gr FNGC bullets to shoot, I'm trying to keep them at around 1800fps so that I may enjoy increased trigger time at a reduced cost, yet still have a round that would cleanly take just about anything North America will offer up, short of the Woolie Mammoths coming back. I have plenty of jacketed bullets on hand, and I shoot them from time to time, but they are so expensive, I have to shoot too many of them (yes I might be a slight hoarder of .375, 300gr jacketed bullets).

I would think with a GC bullet you could break 2000 FPS easily. J.Michael

Oh, I have

They are more unpleasant at 2200 than a 300 is at almost 2700! I think 18-1900 is the sweet spot for shooting more than 20 rounds at a go. The friend I bought the ones I am shooting now has gotten over 2400fps with IMR4831 in the Ruger case and a Hawkeye rifle.

H&H here, Ruger No. 1.

I use IMR 4064 at book velocities near to at 2500fps for the 300gr. Hornady jacketed bullets. Kills hogs DRT.

Take a look here for your wolly mammoth projectiles => http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=409820149

I have not shot any of them yet but they look like real thumpers. Dan and Tina are great folks to boot!

Why Hoot

I have known Dan and Tina for about 12 years now. That is the exact bullet I have been shooting, and the main reason I ordered a mold just like it. His way 360 grains lubed and checked, the mold maker says the one I am getting will weigh in at a light 350 grains. Dan is a master caster, and he is who got me started in the dark art of bullet casting. I shot several of his guns, and shot a couple thousand of his bullets when we both lived in Alaska. His son Daniel Jr is living in Texas now. It sure is a small world amongst the cast bullet shooters. Now, you are shooting the 300 grainers at 2500, I am thinking that is where I want to be, rifle is a tack driver with a 300 at 2650, but I don't think an animal will miss 150fps if I can get them to shoot accurately at that speed. The short neck on the Ruger means it shouldn't shoot cast very well, but even with .3" of bullet sticking into the powder chamber, I have shot some very impressive groups with Dan's bullets, and they were very pleasant to shoot.

That's fabulous!

I should've guessed I wasn't the only one who knew. My first dealing with Dave and Tina was just a month or so back. I ordered some of those .375's as well as his 270gr. 35 caliber bullets. There was a minor snafu in the delivery and, by the time I got through his e-mail on the subject, I was laughing so hard I couldn't see to type a reply. Needless to say, he cleared things up post haste. Good folks there.

Nice shooting too!

He was my main supply for 454 and 45/70 bullets until he got me hooked on casting.

that is a lot of bullet

I've seen the 260 grain lead bullets of that diameter intended for .375 Winchester and .38-55 and those looked to be pretty long bullets. A 350 grain at 1800 fps would probably go all the way through a Buffalo. I would think for any lesser game you could use a 300 at 1800.

Indeed!

Pretty good sectional density, the gentleman I purchased the ones I am shooting now gets over 2400fps from this bullet with 4831.
