22 LR pistol? 22 LR rifle?

Referring here to dependability, ruggedness, accuracy in the "best" category.

I`ll have to say Ruger to both pistol and rifle.

For handguns, if accuracy, S&W 41 or FA or the out of production HS autos. If this is for all around general purpose use, the Ruger 22/45 Lite with threaded barrel is the best thing going. It's light, plenty accurate, decent trigger, etc. Costs about $330 new. That's an initial payment on the other two. You can bet the 41 doesn't ride around on the tractor with me.

For rifles, the 10/22 just has so much aftermarket stuff available.

Same for the Ruger Mark II/III pistol

If you don't mind a bolt rifle, CZ makes the most accurate, rugged, and durable 22 rifle of anybody. I've got 4 of them, counting the Scout kids rifle, and each of them will put 5 rounds of high velocity ammo that they like into under 1/2" at 50 yards. The full stock model will put 5 rounds into under 3/8".... They are built like a tank, all steel, and except for the Scout, they are full size rifles. Triggers are easily adjusted to a decent pull of around 2.5 to 3 pounds... I've got a LOT of other 22 rifles ranging from 10/22's to Kimber Super America's and the CZ is hands down my favorite.

For a pistol, I still think Ruger makes the most rugged, accurate 22 pistol; they should they've been making the same basic pistol for 60 years now. I don't think you could ever really wear out a MK II pistol. The 22/45's are nice too. Mine are all very accurate with ammo they like, always reliable, and just work. Again, I have lots of other 22 pistols, but if I could only have one, it would be a Ruger...

CZ had slipped my mind as it's not a US brand. HOWEVER, the club president has one and it's a real hoot to shoot. When he brings it out the silly grins commence. It'd be great if we found a way to increase the supply of such rifles in the club.

These 22 rifles are pretty popular with my club members. Several fellas have sent them off to be customized. The stock rifle, itself, is pretty accurate, these "customized" CZ's are amazing! I don't have one myself, but I'd sure would if I could.

As for pistols, I have a Browning that I like, but my friend has a Sig Trailside, that's amazing. I don't see a lot of these, and I don't know if they still make them, or how much they cost, but his hits pretty good. I believe they were made by Hammerli. He gave about 350 for his, but that was a while ago. It shoots rings around my Browning.

MK III or Browning and for rifles the 10-22 is king but if you want a bolt the Ruger .22 American seems to be pretty darn good.

They are excellent shooters, and lightweight. Have no idea if they are being made today.
