A couple of pre war Smiths
by Warhawk, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Tuesday, November 19, 2013, 16:59 (4014 days ago)
I picked up a couple of oldies this morning. I saw these last week and after doing a little research decided to buy these two.
First up is a 38/44 Heavy Duty, from 1938. 5 inch barrel, lots of blue wear, but no rust. The grips do not number to the gun.
This is the one I'm excited about, been looking for an old Smith 44 Special for years and this is the first one I've ever found that I could afford.
It's a customized gun, barrel has been cut to about 3 5/8 inches, re-nickled and I believe those are aftermarket sights. Made in 1926. The cylinder and barrel are marked with the serial number. The grips are cheap imitation stags marked K frame underneath, this one gets a set of Grashorn stags.
It's no collectors piece, but I'm tickled with it.
the seller also has ...

a High Standard Sentinel 4 inch chrome barrel & cylinder, gold frame, white grips, $429

for $599, that one was tempting but I've got way too many lever guns already.
Maybe I'll carry something up there and see if he'll trade.
Phenomenal price on the 1894P

Those were made in very limited numbers. You should run back there and get it.

I had a thought, once you get it, check to see if the grips number to the gun. The same guy owned the two I bought and third outdoorsman. I wonder if the grips might have gotten switched.
Are you coming to Clarksville in March? We can compare how they shoot.
I will do that...

...and I am planning on coming to Clarksville, look forward to it.

Funny, the first thing I thought of on seeing the 38/44 was that it was the perfect candidate for conversion to .44 Special. Then I scrolled down a bit further!
Can you take another pic or two of the rear sight on the .44 conversion? It looks very nicely done.

I've had the same thought about the 38/44

I took several more pics of the 44, but all the rest were blurry. I'll try again tomorrow in the daylight, I can't get flash pics of guns to take worth a @!#$% much less on a nickel gun.

Thanks, I am very short on 44 Spl ammo and need to get my loading bench/room finished up so I can load some.
Both of these Smiths make me think of Elmer Keith, and smile.
Yes indeed.
