Huh; I had no idea they made such a beast!

I've had a slight lust for a Ural for years, or an actual BMW airhead. They are cool looking motors for sure!

There is a guy here in Indy who is half of a two brother team of artists/designers/photographers who rides a Ural. They have some cool bikes, including a café racer BMW.

Here's a photo-essay he did of his trip around Indy recently when the Moto GP race was in town.

other than freezing to death, i always wondered how they would do in the snow.

...Jeff says I don't. I always do well to follow his advice, so I don't have one. Not YET, anyway.

unreliability and aggravation are mostly what i hear about them. costco, even was selling the model that had the paint job etc like the WWII version.

and think how many guns we could fit into that side car!

me too but whenever i read up on them, it seems that

You'd have to get an MG42 to mount on the sidecar!!

Two wheel drive Urals

by Jhenry, Tuesday, September 17, 2013, 16:52 (4090 days ago) @ cable

The Urals with the two wheel drive feature have a lever between the bike and the side car that engages the side car wheel. At that point the two drive wheels are the two rear wheels in essence. Never the front wheel. There is no differential, so turning on pavement when engaged is tricky. It is like running a trike with welded spider gears if that makes sense.

I want one too.

Most of the reliability issues have been addressed. The brakes are now Brembo, except for the rear drum. The carbs are Keihn I believe. Nippondenso supplies some of the electrical components etc.

Did I mention I really want one? I have two bikes now, so getting a third is probably not in the cards at this moment.

"Russian Reliability" sounds like a phrase designed to

make a Lucas electrical engineer feel better about himself... :-D

Still, they are cool.

I always wondered why they stopped building it.

Apparently the V-twins were having overheating problems in North Africa, and this was the solution. Maybe it was just too much like what the Germans were using to be able to market to the returning GI's.
