My son called tonight to tell me about his day.

Left the Corps three years ago for college when he was told that they would not deploy for a third tour ("Dad its the Super Bowl and we all want to go") and were told that the Kilo Co had enough war for awhile.

Flew through school and graduated with a degree in Manufacturing Technology in three years and started work a week after graduation in an Aerospace company in his field that recruited him in part for his security clearance with the Corps. Happy as a clam working 58 hours a week out the chute making secret stuff out of titanium.

Called and ask if I remembered when he called six years ago...

He began to break up and told me it was six years ago today that the boys from Kilo Co. Zindras, McRah, Noble and Lynch were killed right around him.

He said he thought about that day everyday and why he walked away with his ears ringing.

Make you wonder how things turn out.

The Great Mystery.

The question has plagued me since childhood. How in God's name did you charge up Cemetary Hill, or come ashore at Omaha Beach and NOT get hit? Being nothing more than an armchair thinker, I have always been profoundly moved by the men who live with that same question for the rest of their lives, for real. It's as old as war itself.

The anniversary of a friends passing is days away.

Four Purple Hearts. Died hitting his head, falling in a hospital bathroom. Don't make a lot of sense.

One of the "problems" of aging is to see the

Things like that happen

I have no certainty if those things happen due to the vagaries of the universe, or because God said so, or something in between. I lean somewhat toward things happening for a reason.

None the less, we are then entrusted by God to do something with what we have, which often includes tragedy. That's a lot of trust sometimes.

Some opt to be less than trustworthy, and some don't.

That part is all on us. Best wishes Byron. I am sure your boy will be fine.

Same question followed many men who served

My Father-in-law was a Marine on Iwo Jima. During the thick of it, he looked right and left at his squad and he was the only one still alive. He never could shake that and wonder why he was not killed as well. That kind of stuff does a number on folks heads and will as long as they live.

There is no answer and luck of the draw, seems as good as any. I suppose I should see some plan in this, but I don't.

Given that we have free will I don't know how a plan

would work although an all-knowing, ever-present, all-powerful God could make it work but I know there is a purpose and I believe it is to prepare us for the next life.

I do not think there is anyone that can explain the issues of who dies, who live who is hurt and who is unscathed.

I think one carry away from combat should be . . . now may not be your time
