Decided to rebarrel the Remington 722......

.....which a few of you may recall was a factory .300 Savage carbine. It has a much modified stock (nicely done) and enough finish wear that it cannot be considered "collectible". As it sits it is a very useful rifle, but I think the kids will have better use from it if it were rebarreled to .257 Roberts or .243 Winchester.

Since we have both a left-hand AND a right-handed .243 here, I'm leaning strongly towards making it a Bob. And before you remind me how useful it is as a .300 Savage, please know that A. You are right. And B. we have four thutty-thuttys hereabouts. While I regard the .300 as a Super .30-30 And Then Some, a .257 would blow my cassock up.

Looking to order a Douglas Mountain Rifle barrel as soon as some funds are freed up.....anyone want an excellent bore but finish worn .300 barrel? Can be had for the price of shipping.

Decided to rebarrel the Remington 722......

Otony, for what its worth. At one time I had accumulated some 50 take off bbls running from new unfired to used X and from 22 CF upm thru 300 Win Mag, advertised all around and over internet, took to probably 25 gunshows. Couldn't give them away. Finally just junked. You need to find a hobbist gunsmith with a little sales ability and time on his hands. FWIW dept. :-|

Remington chambered the 722 in 257Bob, BUT, the action isn't really long enuff, you have to seat heavier bullets way deep and that is the most often heard criticism of that action.

Yessir, you are correct. Figured I could live with it, but it might be better to rebarrel to .243, eh?

I have been thinking about picking up a pre-fit .257 barrel for my Savage 11, which already has barrels in .243, 7mm-08, and .308! The Savage is advertised as a short action, but is a fair amount longer than the 722. The mag box is as well, so maybe I should just set up both kids with .243s and indulge my own Bob fantasies.......

Lee, the Good Lord knows I have sat on a bunch of firearms parts over the past 30 plus years. I figure my kids will have to worry about some of it....:-D

I was going to suggest 250AI, but I see RidinLou has covered that! Off to do my own riding.

I will always give a good home to any take off barrels, even those shot out. I use the chamber section to make chamber type straight line bullet seaters in my shop.

I have always wanted to rebarrel a 722...

to 250 Savage with a bit faster twist (1:9 or 10) than the 1:14 which was long a standard for early Savages. There would be little ballistic advantage to the Bob in such a setup.

If you're going to go with something else, why not a .260 Remington or a 7-08? Both are relatively low recoil cartridges and either should fit fine in the action if the .300 did?

All that being said, I have a weak spot in my heart for the .300 Savage (own two, both Savage Model 99s) and think of them as a short-necked .308 rather than a juiced up .30-30. I'd leave well enough alone and hand-load up judiciously if I wanted more oomph than I can get from the factory .300 (which are downloaded a bit for the Savage Model 99s).
