I walked into a local gunshop today and lo and behold they had a Rossi M92 357 carbine on the rack. That's really what I had been wanting more than a Circuit Judge. The 357 carbines are pretty rare right now. The shop owner said he was shocked to even find one to order and really didn't believe it until it came in. Paid $512 OTD and it has the 20 inch barrel. Karma I guess - hated to walk away from that one.

I had a 16" pre-safety that was really neat and did home defense duty for a number of years. Let it go in a weak moment and wish I had it back.
I figure home defense, starter gun for my little one

keep thinking i'll sell mine, after all, it just sits in the safe. then I think about that time that Glen, Steve and I were at Clover Creek and I dropped a 700lb feral boar in his tracks! one 180gr cast plain base thru the brain pan and I'm still eatin' on him!

ok, what kind of ammo would you all suggest?

Are hollowpoints going to open too fast?
What are you planning to shoot with it?
by Byron, Friday, January 06, 2012, 06:22 (4709 days ago) @ stonewalrus
The most versitile load with be factory pack 158 gr jacketed softpoints. Most will shoot well in almost any carbine without any fiddling around. Fairly inexpensive, close to .30/30 power, will kill deer as well as most anything.
125 hollowpoints is a viscious load in a carbine. Bullets will open very quickly...penetration may be a problem depending on what you are shooting.
Of course....many here will recommend a cast bullet of on kind or another. When properly matched to the gun they work wonderfully...still...they do require done right or the gun will never shoot well.

Thanks. I was figuring close range deer and home defense

Sounds like the two loads you mentioned would cover pretty we'll il until I get up more cast loads. I use a 158 gr cast semi wadcutter with 6 gr Unique in 357 cases in my Security Six for plinking. Guess that would do for play.
Good find! I like my 357 carbines.
