IMR 4227 and the .357 Mugwump
I have most of a pound of IMR 4227 (figure out how old THAT stuff is) that I bought for some forgotten project. Anybody got a pet .357 Magnum load using 4227 that they'd share?
Well, I've shot two...
Here's the skinny, straight out of Lyman 47th Handbook.
The only two I've had experience with are the following:
Hornady 125gr jacketed hollowpoint: I used 16.0 grains (start: 15.6, max: 19.5)1.590"OAL
Hornady 158grjacketed hollowpoint: I used 13.5grains (start: 12.2, max:
16.1)1.590"0AL
NOTE WELL: THESE ARE "RIFLE" LOADS AND WERE SHOT OUT OF A MARLIN LEVER GUN.
I've shot some lead slugs to, but these were the two best that showed the best accuracy, out of that rifle.
There's a bunch of loads in the Lyman 47th for .357 using IMR 4227. I use to shoot IMR 4227, but not that much anymore.

Give it to Tom to bring to me and I will burn it in the 357 Max and 357 Herrett.

I & H 4227 works great in 357Max, 357Herrett, 41, 44, 45lc & 454 using heavy CB's.
However
do not try to use reduced loads with this powder.

I like 12.5 grains of 4227 with 200 grain cast bullets in the .357 Magnum.
That's more like it
"In my shop, we often say that anything less than 200 grains is effeminate." - Chic Gaylord
No offense to the otherwise inclined, of course.

Chic Gaylod: Yeah YOU THINK that HE didn't have
some compensating to do

Of the Troops & For the Troops
Possibly
But if you mean his name, I kind of doubt it.
In the old days, Chic was a pretty common men's nickname (for lack of a better term), and Gaylord didn't have the implications it does now (at least not very widely).
I suppose there might have been a few snickers here and there, but I bet there weren't many to his face.

I use 14.5 grains under a 173 grain cast bullet. Shoots very good out of my NM Blackhawk and n frames. That is on the max side I believe so work up to it. That load shoots better than the same bullet under 2400 or 296 etc.
Also JT has a few good loads under his Taffin loads using 4227.
