I managed to lose my Leatherman wave I've had for a number of years during deer season and am looking to replace it. There are an abundance of Leatherman, Gerber and SOG models out there. Any suggestions for a new one? I picked up a Leatherman blast as an interim measure but not really thrilled with it.

I've carried a Wave for years and like it quite a bit. I bought it well before Mr. Leatherman was financially supporting the Kerry campaign though.
I have very little experience with any of the Gerber tools. I've carried a SOG Power Plier for years and think it's one of the best.

Including a PST II, a Super Tool, a Wingman and a Wave. Have not tried any of the others, though my cousin is a big fan of the Gerbers because he finds the Leatherman uncomfortable to grip when using the pliers.

The PST II was my first and I loved it, the Super Tool was my next and the locking tools was a big improvement. Bought the Wingman on a whim and really liked the pocket clip and the blades availability without having to open the tool, but was not impressed with the overall quality of it compared to the previous tools. Next, I found a Wave on clearance and decided to give it a try, and love it. It carries very nicely in the watch pocket of my jeans, I can open and close the knife blades with one hand and the quality is as good as any of my other Leatherman tools.

My current criteria for a multi-tool includes: US made, quality construction, one-handed operation of knife blade, easy pocket carry (pocket clip or fits in watch pocket, preferrably both), sturdy tools, useable scissors and a comfortable grip for using pliers.

. . . while the nice Wave my son gave me languishes unused because, well, I don't know why, other than I simply haven't made the change. I admit the Wave is nice and has great features, but . . .

In addition, for all-round use, I carry a tiny Mini-Buck in my "watch pocket". I went with this because it is ALWAYS with me and is so inexpensive that a loss would not be earth-shattering. Of course, we never lose the inexpensive stuff, just the pricey ones. The Mini is stainless and plastic, has been thru the laundry several times without ill effects, and meets almost all blade needs nicely and without fanfare . . . totally low-profile.

Haven't checked out anything newer.

I have several. mebbe many! the ones I use most frequently are a SOG and a Schrade, the latter mebbe no longer made.

It will do quick work on pvc pipe under 3".

just introduced - late '90s, I think. It has ridden on my belt daily since then. great tool, not too big, not too small.

Mine's loose enough after all these years that I can flip it open like a butterfly knife... still works great.

I bought a Leatherman Crunch a year ago. I haven't touched any of my half dozen others since.
The locking "Vise Grip" style pliers put it a step above the others in utility.

Forgot that I have a Crunch myself. It is very handy.

and I quite liked it, much better than the issued Gerber. I now carry a K2 Juice, also a Leatherman product.

About Mr. Leatherman's political leanings, I did write him at the time. He was polite and forthcoming about his opinions. Sad to say I think he is/was one of those fooled by the other side, not necessarily an adherent of a radical socialist agenda. I was disappointed in him.

I use/used my multi-tools every day. I got one of the very first Leatherman tools when they came out and have used several. I got one for my son-in-law for Christmas 3-4 years ago and he is still carrying his everyday. They are pretty good. The only problem I ever had is that I broke the can opener of the original one on a Tray-pack while trying to feed my squad.

Really depends on the tools that you want but if I was you I might just get another Wave.
