Did Super Vel kill the .41 mag? If so, we owe Lee

a round of applause;-) reading Max Prasac's Big Bore Handguns last night...the author posited that Lee's excellent projectiles for then .357 mag. contributed, along with other factors, to the early demise of the .41 mag in Law Enforcement.

Did Super Vel kill the .41 mag? If so, we owe Lee

From what I read in a .41 Magnum article by Skeeter, improper ammunition selection did away with the .41. He said the PD purchasers bought the 210 @1500fps as opposed to the 900fps stuff. That along with the lack of cheap practice ammo.

AMONG OTHER THINGS COPS COULDN'T HANDLE IT AND THE GUN WAS TOO HEAVY FOR MANY TO CARRY WILLINGLY

This is what I'd heard for many years.....

however I'm a big 41 fan and always will be me thinks. Back when Dirty Harry made 44mag's beyond my finanical ability, I could always afford a 41Mag.

I use to read stuff written by gunwriters of the time that the 41 magnum had a lot less recoil than the 44 magnum. I've never shot a single action 41 magnum but I've owned and shot many 41 magnum Smith & Wesspm model 57's 4" and 6 1/2" and a couple of model 58's. All were nasty to shoot even loaded down to what I thought was going to be moderate loads. Kinda like a 357 on steroids rather than a mild 44 magnum as touted by the writers. I divested myself of them and never looked back.

Yep, the problem was the "service" ammo. The 58 had magna stocks, and shooting it was brutal. A friend cracked a bone in his thumb with one. And this was just before the cultural swing to auto pistols for LE. Dallas PD issued the 58 for a brief time, and in the one shooting I remember, the scrote was hit once above the belt buckle, and quickly assumed room temperature without further incident.

Trivia: The Hurst Tx. PD was the first in the nation to issue autos. Issued was the Colt Combat Commander in satin nickel.

Trivia: The model 58 was incredibly loud when touched off in an empty bar room without warning. Don't ask me how I know this...

I had a 58 that had been rechamber to a .41/44 wildcat. I swapped out the cylinder and returned the wildcat to its previous owner after I fired one of the wildcat rounds without ear-protection. It was as if someone jammed an ice-pick in each ear.

ARE YOU SURE ABOUT DALLAS? I KNOW SAN ANTONIO DID.

and Amarillo...

. I think if it had been more to Skeeter's idea: essentially an L frame/Python sized gun with a more 41 special/10mm type of cartridge, it would have had a chance. As much as I tease folks about the 41, I am glad we have it around and that is has seen success as a hunting cartridge.

And San Francisco...

Which begs a bit of banter, but it would be bawdry beyond belief.

Besides, I never even been to California.

Honest. :-D

How you doin' Gunner?

One of these day's send me the pressure data that you have on the 41 and the "other" 41's. I've been a bit busy and kinda forgot.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Well, it may be moribund, but it's not dead. Loaded with 215-220 grain cast bullets at 950-1000 fps, it's a pussycat and works great in the Freedom Arms Model 97 I own. If I want to shoot full-house factory ammo, I use the Ruger Redhawk 5-inch (blued, no less). The extra weight makes the experience tolerable, if not pleasant.

If I ever find an affordable Marlin lever action in .41 Magnum, I'll buy it. In a perfect world, it would be pistol grip with a 2/3 length magazine and have peep sights with a Redfield Sourdough front sight. Perhaps in some alternate universe....
