From what I read in a .41 Magnum article by Skeeter, improper ammunition selection did away with the .41. He said the PD purchasers bought the 210 @1500fps as opposed to the 900fps stuff. That along with the lack of cheap practice ammo.

I use to read stuff written by gunwriters of the time that the 41 magnum had a lot less recoil than the 44 magnum. I've never shot a single action 41 magnum but I've owned and shot many 41 magnum Smith & Wesspm model 57's 4" and 6 1/2" and a couple of model 58's. All were nasty to shoot even loaded down to what I thought was going to be moderate loads. Kinda like a 357 on steroids rather than a mild 44 magnum as touted by the writers. I divested myself of them and never looked back.

Yep, the problem was the "service" ammo. The 58 had magna stocks, and shooting it was brutal. A friend cracked a bone in his thumb with one. And this was just before the cultural swing to auto pistols for LE. Dallas PD issued the 58 for a brief time, and in the one shooting I remember, the scrote was hit once above the belt buckle, and quickly assumed room temperature without further incident.

Trivia: The Hurst Tx. PD was the first in the nation to issue autos. Issued was the Colt Combat Commander in satin nickel.

Trivia: The model 58 was incredibly loud when touched off in an empty bar room without warning. Don't ask me how I know this...

Well, it may be moribund, but it's not dead. Loaded with 215-220 grain cast bullets at 950-1000 fps, it's a pussycat and works great in the Freedom Arms Model 97 I own. If I want to shoot full-house factory ammo, I use the Ruger Redhawk 5-inch (blued, no less). The extra weight makes the experience tolerable, if not pleasant.

If I ever find an affordable Marlin lever action in .41 Magnum, I'll buy it. In a perfect world, it would be pistol grip with a 2/3 length magazine and have peep sights with a Redfield Sourdough front sight. Perhaps in some alternate universe....
