120 gr cast for the 30-30 load data?

by woody, Sunday, February 24, 2013, 09:20 (4293 days ago)

I was given a bunch of 120 GC cast bullets sized .310. I think the were for the 30 carbine since the are pointed. I wanted to load them up in the 30-30 to use as plinking rounds for my contender. Any load recommendations? My lyman book doesn't have 120 grain data and I'm not sure on using data for jacketed bullets. If not I may just melt them down. Thanks.

I have used 8-12 gr. of IMR SR4759 for such loads.

120 gr cast for the 30-30 load data?

Lyman cast book says

Red Dot 7.0 1400 10.0 1747 with cast 115 GC boolit.

I found 7.9 to be an accurate plinker in the 14" barrel.

I don't have either powders.

Believe it or not I don't have red dot. I have clays, universal clays,unique,296,748,4350,4198. I would like to use unique if I can.

Lyman also says this about 30-30 and Unique

Again 115 GC so it will be good enough for starters.
Unique
7.5 148 11.4 1913

Ought to be a plinker load in there somewhere. The new manual may have some of the new powders, but I don' refer to it much.

4198 would be ther first powder I would use.

I'vbe never shot 120 grain cast bullets in the .30-30, but 4198 would be my first choice for such loads. Ken Waters has some helpful information on cast bullets in the .30-30 in Pet Loads.

Thanks for all the help

Thanks for all the info I will try 4198 as you suggested Glen and also will try unique since it uses very little powder and I'm only looking for a round to plink/practice with on steel targets and maybe chucks.

I've got a bunch of 130 grain plain base carbine bullets that I got from Chris Ford many years ago. Haven't shot them in the carbine because it has a staked piston nut and I don't want to gunk up the gas system. Reckon I could shoot them in that sorry old 03-A3 I got from you with a pinch of Unique?

BTW, you coming to Arkansas in March? I'd still like for you to see that A3 after I worked it over.

I have used this bullet in several of my carbines. I also was cautious about the lead getting into the gas port. Anyway after a thousand or two using these cast bullets I decided to open the gas piston up. Couldn't find much if any leading caused by the bullets. Interesting anyway. Good Luck.
