Can’t see them

by Otony, Sunday, September 12, 2021, 07:07 (928 days ago) @ Paul

Starting a couple of months ago, I’ve been unable to see any pics on this forum.

As you asked when I commented on the problem, yes, I am using an iPad.

How about now?

by Paul ⌂, Sunday, September 12, 2021, 18:56 (927 days ago) @ Otony

Here's try at something different. I'm posting the full URL of the images, followed by the full url in the image code for the forum. On MY browser it shows up with a link followed by an image. I really can't imagine what they've done to cripple your browser, but I've had a dim view of Apple's monopolistic desires and practices for over three decades now. Working hard to ensure incompatibility with everyone else in the name of "exclusivity" or whatever is just plain... <rant mode off> OK. Here's what I'm trying to see if you can at least get a look at the URL's of the images. If you can't see the images but CAN see the URL's, you should be able to right click them and open them in new tabs, or click them and then use the back button to return to the message.

Yes, that works!

Sorry to make you jump through hoops.

Otony

Great. Now, following up on diagnosing the problem...

by Paul ⌂, Monday, September 13, 2021, 09:09 (927 days ago) @ Otony

Glad we got that figured out (sort of, kind of, only to a certain extent)...

Now, next question - in the picture post above, do you at least get a little icon indicating a missing image? Or is the post blank where the images should be?

If you can see an icon, try right clicking it an see if it gives you an option to "open link in new tab" or "copy URL" or some such.

I can also see them now

by Brien @, NWArkansas, Monday, September 13, 2021, 00:10 (927 days ago) @ Paul

I could not see them before on my PC or my Iphone5 but could see them on my old Ipod

How about now?

by Slow Hand ⌂ @, Indiana, Monday, September 13, 2021, 06:27 (927 days ago) @ Paul

I can see the, now too! I was the one who posted awhile back about not seeing pics on my apple devices. I tried chrom browser and a
Could see them. Tried that a couple days ago and no luck.

I'm going to try three different ways to post the same image to see if we can get to the bottom of what's going on.

First, right below this text, is a random 1861 Colt that I grabbed a pic of off the 'net a while back. I used the "upload" button to the right of the post editing window to choose it from my hard drive and upload it. The forum system automatically inserts it into the appropriate brackets and tags and uses a modified URL in the process.

The image above this text uses the abbreviated (why is that such a long word?) URL as follows:

images/uploaded/20210913141141613f5c1dc4160.jpg

The forum system puts {img} in front of that URL and {/img} behind that URL (only it uses [ and ] instead of { and } ) to signify that there's an image that needs to be shown to the browser.

What I did last night was add https://sixshootercommunity.com/forum/ in front of the word "images" in the URL. This gives the complete URL that apparently Apple needs to recognize that that image is an image that should be shown in the browser. So the complete URL for this 1861 Colt would be:

https://sixshootercommunity.com/forum/images/uploaded/20210913141141613f5c1dc4160.jpg

If we take that url and enclose it in the image tags {img} and {/img} with no spaces and with the [ in place of the { and ] in place of the } we end up with an Apple acceptable image tag that results in an image appearing where before there was none. Like so:

So now we know what's happening so folks can't see the pictures that are uploaded onto our server. What I DON'T know is how to fix the forum system so that it would use the longer URL when inserting images into a post. When done manually it apparently works just fine.

Here's a test post.

Yep, that worked for me. I can see the bottom picture but not the first one.

But do you see anything where the first pic should be?

Here's a test post.

Just the tin rectangle outline and [image] at the upper left corner. I do see Creeker’s pic of the semis though…

The difference

by Paul ⌂, Thursday, September 16, 2021, 18:45 (923 days ago) @ Slow Hand

The difference between Creeker's post and the others is that he used a hosting site and linked from there. The others are uploaded on the server. If you would right click an image that doesn't show and select "copy image address" or whatever your browser's equivalent is, then you can paste it in the URL box and add https://sixshootercommunity.com/forum/ in front of it to complete the URL. We've got something messed up in the forum system code that's not throwing the right URL into image posts.

The difference

by Slow Hand ⌂ @, Indiana, Friday, September 17, 2021, 15:50 (923 days ago) @ Paul

Makes sense. I’m on an iPad or an iPhone so no right clicking for me!

I see [image] for the first one and the picture for the second

Thanks, Brien.

by Paul ⌂, Tuesday, September 14, 2021, 07:47 (926 days ago) @ Brien

Can you right click the "image" and get an option to view or copy the image location? Or to "open image in new tab" or "copy URL" or something similar?

Thanks, Brien.

This gives me this message

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

For what it's worth...

by Hoot @, Diversityville, Liberal-sota, Tuesday, September 14, 2021, 12:38 (926 days ago) @ Brien

I get the same error message when clicking on Brien's link.

I have had no issues with pictures on this forum. Windows 7 and 10, FireFox browser.

Very valuable info, Brien. THANK YOU!

by Paul ⌂, Tuesday, September 14, 2021, 15:37 (926 days ago) @ Brien

I still don't know how to fix it, but at least I have a glimmering of what's wrong. Will have to call in someone who actually knows what they are doing if we're going to patch it up.

Very neat little poppers there!
