Goofy question....

......I had another Remington 722 fall into my lap, chambered in .300 Savage. I love the rifle, and pretty obviously the cartridge is a reliable, known performer. But I’ve had an itch lately for a plain walnut stocked .308 with a peep sight. It’s probably blasphemy, but can a .300 chamber be cleaned up with a .308 reamer? Does that work, or does the barrel need to be set back a thread?

Here are the dimension specs copied off the SAAMI pdf

I thank you sir!

Some of those dimensions are really close, close enough that it might be prudent to do a chamber cast to see how generous Remington was when they made this barrel! But you are correct, and have made the rusty wheels turn in my head.

Have you treid .308 in the magazines?

Not yet, but I will now.....

Next, is try a 308 mag in that action.

The 243,308 mags are the same...if you have to search some out.

We are talking about the internal magazine box, right?

by Otony, Wednesday, March 17, 2021, 18:15 (1129 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

Are you saying that the fixed internal liner for the magazine is different? If so, you are right, .243/.308 liners are available. But given the incredibly small difference in the overall length to the shoulder of both cartridges, I would be dreadfully surprised if Remington used a inner mag that wouldn’t accept a .308 round.

Still going to check to make sure though.

Oy! I read 722 and thought 788... As Emily Latilia said

TRIPLE BLASPHEMY AND UNFORBIVABLE

Well, I am not sure I can do it now.....

by Otony, Monday, March 22, 2021, 14:09 (1124 days ago) @ JT

......after that chastisement I think it will have to stay a .300 Savage! I’m betting the deer won’t know!

I've owned .308 (a Remington 700) and a couple of .300 Savages (99R and 99F). The .308 and the 99R are gone on down the road, the 99F goes to deer camp with me every year. If there's any meaningful difference in a .308 and a .300 Savage, I'm at a loss as to what it might be. The 99F favors 150 grain point flat base bullets or 180 grain round nose flat base. Either one kills anything I'm ever likely to hunt "dead right there" if I do my part.

All of this is a long-winded way of saying leave it as a .300.
