Mic might take a while to get your rifle done , but I have shot & handled several of his lever guns top notch work.
Another source is Jim West of Wild West Guns. He recently opened a second store, this one, in Las Vegas. No need to send it all the way to Anchorage.

seemed about perfect for a quick handling rifle, probably hardx to find now.

What would be the "ideal" length to shorten it to?

I have seen them as short as 16"....actually looked very nice and handy.
