We still have several boxes at the shop... (reply)

I have a partial box of those in 30-06. Kind of sliped my mind. Used them back in the 70's when the 30-06 was the only center fire I had and had to use it for every thing. Shot a small female coyote (ky-oat) in the neck and just about took her head off. Don't think I will ever use them again since I now have better rifles for that type of hunting.

With a youngun in the house I was figuring I could run a cable through a pump shotgun action anchored to a wall stud and still have rounds up the tube. Would be hard to have a decent cable through a 22.

Tom, where you live, a lever action .30-30 doesn't work well as a house gun. Too many houses around close. There are lots of cheap beater shotguns to be had that will work better. and be safer to boot. Even a Marlin .22 auto would do for that duty. The one that sits behind my bedroom door is one of the old M2 carbine versions. $110 otd at Tim's pawmshop, and it is accurate and reliable as long as it's fed good ammo. Got an SKS carbine handy, but it's for outside.

If you ever shoot a .30-30 inside a structure, you will need a really good set of hearing aids from then on.

Just get another 10/22 and load it with Mini-Mag hollow points. They are reliable and not very expensive.

Is there any such thing as a 30-30 defense load? (reply)

I've seen a few people who were shot with them. Any 150 grain soft-point will work fine. You're liable to get through & through penetration, but it's damned unlikely you're going to need to shoot him a second time.

is the bullet to use and I do believe Federal had a load using it. EVEN if it is the reduced recoil load (no I didn't look it up before posting) it would be dang good maybe even better if it is the reduced recoil load.

PS - I knew Federal had at least one such load. Remington has a reduced recoil load but my limited experience with this bullet would indicate that it might not be the best choice but would work depending on what you're defending against (of course).
