IIRC it was in a Jeff Cooper column or article trouble with stories like that, there always seem to be witnesses.I believe he and Jeff were in the So. Pacific about the same time. I don't think Jeff witnessed it just a follow up. The sniper was standing on the ground.

I believe the story was in the bet Camp Perry form, he took careful aim and hit him in the ankle. So witnesses claim.
