I have done that with boogered screws (reply)

I have used that method with very good success. I used a vise and clamped them in with a piece of leather to avoid messing up the threads. Use a light ball peen hammer and nice even light strikes. No heavy handed stuff. Just keep pushing that metal where you want it. You can then finish it off with emery wrapped around a file and the screw in a drill too act as a simple lathe. Polish and cold blue, or if you are tempted, fire blue them. A thin swiss file works well to adjust the slot if needed.

Next time I'm on my way to Nashville, I'll swing by your place and drop it off, and you can fool with the screws. Heck your retired, you probably need something to fool with anyway. The screw heads are really soft on this thing. I'm not sure but that I might have to drill them out. One more thing, the gun's trigger is supposed to be adjustable, but I haven't figured that out yet.

Thanks, it's a .38 special... (reply)

You are right, they did come in .22 long rifle, but also they made one in .32 Magnum for a few years. For $75.00 I'd like to get one of each. So far it likes 3.0grs. of 231 under a 148gr. double ended wadcutter. Cheap entertainment, and I can hit pretty good with it too. Probably that's all I'll shoot in it.

That's plum nice, Joe. Wish I could find bargains like that! Stonewalrus has an Astra .45 Colt that looks a lot like that and it's a dandy shooter, too.

I have not tried this myself, mind you, but if you can't find any sideplate screws there may be a way to salvage the originals. I have read of a technique that involves drilling holes in a flat block of very hard wood just big enough to set the screw shaft into, then taking a light hammer and peening the displaced metal around the screw slot back into place. Then you clean up the slot and screw head with a proper size slot file and cold blue the screw. Wouldn't think they would stand much screwin' and unscrewin' after that treatment, but sideplate screws shouldn't need to be removed that often.

Naw, it's not a custom, one of a kind gun! Well maybe in a way it is. $75.00 for the gun and $7.00 for the holster. It had broken grips when I bought it, but I got these to fit with a little work, and persuasion. It's nice to say goodbye to the duct tape. Taurus circa 1981. How about that front blade? Heck, even I can see that! I think if one got hit in the head with it, it would leave a deep impression on one's mind.

It actually shoots pretty good.

Joe

PS: Anybody know where I can get some side plate screws? They were pretty boogered up when I got it. Oh, and yea, I checked with the company, no dice.
