However, the Steve Herrett story does appear on pp. 143-146 in the Compadres chapter of Good Friends, Good Guns, Good Whiskey.

On page 144, Mr. Skelton described the pistol as a "like-new Colt New Service Target revolver with 7½-inch barrel...in .44 Russian caliber...and [Mr. Herrett] rechambered it to .44 Special."

Got it! (reply)

Bought it this morning. It is a British frame. The stocks are US military. Really a neat little mongrel. Has a touch of end shake and a bit bigger barrel/cylinder gap than I'd like, but it seems to be pretty sound mechanically. I think the hammer and trigger are replacements, too, as they appear to be very nice original finish, while the frame has an arsenal refinish on it. Should be a fun on and the vintage Tyler T is just gravy.

Makes me wonder if someone put this together after reading some Skeeter after all. :)

Neat .44 Special New Service

British or Canadian military New Service that has had factory .44 Russian/Special barrel and cylinder put on it. Gonna look at it tomorrow. If mechanically sound, it will join my 1st Gen SAA that was similarly converted to .44 Russian/Special. I can't afford the real deal, but these "custom" shooters scratch the itch for those rare pre-war Colt .44s. If I could just find a New Service Target in .44 Special, my joy would be complete. :)
