I've got em' that ring, and them that don't. Never have understood why that is. But, it hasn't affected their function or accuracy.

That reminds me: I told friend of mine about this phenomenon a long time ago.

Since she is decidedly a non-gun person, it really didn't impress her much.

In any case, I thought then − and still do now, to some extent − that it is more commonly found in 'new' guns, whether stainless or carbon steel.

The example I had in mind back then were 'newer' 1911s; I noticed their dust covers would 'ring' slightly when handling the frames during cleaning.
OTOH, I have since heard the same thing from my Series 70s, so maybe it's me who's getting 'old'...

Perhaps better heard when 'clean', I'm not sure; I haven't heard an N-frame for a while.

To me, it always seemed to depend most on the stocks, with Goodyears winning The Ringing Contest.

Stainless also seemed more prone to ringing upon dry-firing, but that's probably because the blued and nickel guns were better dressed.

In K-frames, I have a well-used Model 617 that 'rings' when wearing Hogues but not with walnut.

FWIW, the 'flattest' sounding little snappers in the modern S&W lineup are probably the alloy J-frames; I don't think I ever heard one 'ring'.

I did some routine (i.e. once every five years) internal clean and lube work on my 25-5 yesterday... Rob's FB post spurred me on.

Question: I hear a slight metallic "ping" at the end of the hammer fall. Subtle, but noticeable, and definitely did NOT make this noise prior to cleaning. In dry fire, it passes all function tests and the trigger pull feels smoother and slightly lighter.

The proof will be in live fire, but does this sound familiar? I wonder if it's the hammer block ringing against the newly cleaned channel in the side plate.
