Carrying a pocket knife all my life taught me about lint. (reply)

First, I can rust a blued gun in short order carried next to my body.

Carbon steel pocket knives suffer even worse. There isn't a lot of material in a pocket when you think about it. And, it lay's about as close to your bare skin as it's going to get.

I checked my Keltec daily for the longest and made sure to keep it clean. I got comfy with it after a few months and didn't check it for several weeks. I discovered pretty much what everyone does after those few weeks, not good.

I field strip and clean mine once a week, whether it needs it or not. It's what we don't see that can get a man in trouble. I use my air compressor to blow the internals clean, then it gets doused with Rig or Shooter's Choice and blown out again. Swab the barrel, lightly lube the rails and spray the recoil spring down and blow it clean also. Some of the early Keltec's, had issues with the trigger return spring breaking. My money is on rust having killed the spring, literally. The magazine gets the same treatment monthly.

Works for me.

Always use a pocket holster!! I carried my kel tec in a Don Hume holster. It worked very well and was relatively cheap. I now carry my 442 in a home made copy of the Don Hume style. Nothing else is allowed in that pocket, ever!!

Definitely clean and check once a week or more depending on how often you carry it. Nothing wrong with a good semi auto, but I still prefer my 442 after going through several pocket autos.

Pocket carry.... (reply)

I need to rethink pocket carry without a holster. Hard to access while in the car (carjacker). Plus the laws of probability state that without something covering the trigger (pocket holster) something or someone (me) will cause the gun to discharge.

So I'll see about getting a proper holster pocket and belt.

I carry it loose in the pocket by itself. I like the 7 pocket hiker pants from Cabelas. They have a small pocket over the regular pocket that prevents printing. No holster is probably what I should get. I do have an uncle mikes pocket holster for a J-frame that I use sometimes. It looks like I should get a quality pocket holster for this thing and carry it right.

Reminds me of a story..... (reply)

I was teaching the NRA's Women & Guns course about 20 years ago. Contrary to class rules, one middle-aged (and handicapped) woman brought her concealed carry handgun into the classroom (loaded, we had a rule of no live ammo in the classroom). It was an imported .38 snub that her late husband had bought for her many years before. You've all heard the story before -- he took her out and taught her how to shoot it, she put a box of wadcutters through it, then loaded it with HP ammo and put it in her purse. It had been there fore at least 10 years (maybe 15). When she pulled it out in the classroom, the ammo was severely corroded (cases would have ruptured if fired), it took me 2-3 minutes to get it unloaded since they were rusted to the cylinder, and the barrel was almost completely plugged with lint, lipstick, and various substances of unknown origin. If she had pulled the trigger, a bullet would have never made it out of that barrel!

I took this as a "target of opportunity" and segued over to the Maintenance and Cleaning portion of the class.....

90% of the times I've cleaned my LCP was sitting on the "throne". (a good use of otherwise wasted time, I'm there, the guns there…)

While I'm good about keeping the gun clean, the spare magazine is what I always forget. Last time I unloaded it, one round came out, followed by the rest falling out. The follower was stuck at the bottom due to pocket lint and junk.

Bob,

I carry my Kel-Tec P32 in a galco horsehide pocket holster. It stays a bit cleaner in that holster than the Blackhawk nylon holster I used before, though I have no idea why. The horsehide holster has an open bottom, unlike the nylon one, that might be part of the reason.

In either holster, my practice is to remove the gun on a weekly basis, and use compressed air (from a can or in the shop) to blast the crud free. Mostly I see lint. I always remove the magazine, swap the rounds out, and blow it clean as well. Finally, I blast the holster innards to boot.

Seems like pocket carry is very subject to this issue, so I may swap back out to the pocket clip Kel-Tec makes for my pistol, but frankly it seems a bit spooky to carry that way. Might try one of the kydex trigger guard covers that are attached to a loop of para cord?
