Finn Aagaard was a gem.... (reply)

I read one time that he would write an article and then go over it repeatedly until he was certain every facet of it was correct.

I'll have a serious rifle one of these days. For a time I wanted 338, which is a fine cartridge and doubtless enough for anything I'll ever tangle with. But that old H&H is a classic and all you could ask for.

My first time! (reply)

This is the first time I have gone with the new kid. I have been an "established" cartridge guy my whole life, never saw anything wrong with it, still don't, but I do believe I will like this setup. It will be SS, with a 23" barrel, no muzzle brake, a "black" laminate stock, and hopefully a nice matte scope soon enough. I'm trying to figure out which powder I want to use for full power loads, I think 2400 will work nicely for the cast bullets, but either H414, or 4350 looks like my best all around powder for multiple bullet weights.

Sad tale about the .375 (sort of) (reply)

I went to an estate auction back last fall here in Middle Tennessee. There were about half a dozen VERY nice .375s, including three Winchester Model 70s, that went for astonishingly low prices. Mostly $450-$500. I guess folks around here don't appreciate them much.

One gun writer always comes to mind whenever the 375 H&H (reply)

is mentioned - Finn Aagaard. Mostly african use, but I do remember one article he wrote about shooting a Texas whitetail with a reduced load. Although as a guide he used a 458 w/ghost ring as a heavy, his favorite was the 'scoped 375.

The NRA put out a book containing an excellent compilation of his articles in 1990 - good luck, they sell dear. His widow updated and re-printed "Aagaard's Africa" about five years ago and there is an audio CD of him telling stories. All excellent fare.

Finn Aagaard is my favorite gun writer of all time.

Thats one of the things great about them. I would venture a guess that more 375's in the continental US take more Elk and Whitetail, and Mulies, than Eland, Kudu, Lepoard, and or Cape Buff. We are on the same page Dave, but I'm an opiniated SOB

I think the Ruger will stick around (reply)

There is not a cartridge brought out designed to replace another, there are room for as many as will sell. I too prefer the 308 to the 06 for general all around use. Probably one of the best is the old 260 AAR, as the name implies All around rifle, tho its a fine cartridge to my knowledge has never replaced any, just adds to it. How else could we repeat adding to our WANTS, not NEEDS Ballistically the Ruger is a good cartridge, no question, everbody needs an upgrade one time or another. If you want a Ruger fine, no argument from me, but don't say it will replace the 375 H&H, only in your wants and or needs.
I think the Ruger will stick around (reply)

It doesn't suffer the same maladies the Short Magnums do, it has more case capacity with all bullet weights, and they operate at the same pressure. The reports from PH's in Africa are good, and the words I get from Alaska paint it as a solid performer. It will never replace the 375 H&H, nor would I want it to, just as the 308 couldn't replace the '06, but there is room for both. I look forward to getting a mold for this one, and seeing how much fun I can have with it. Should make a fine companion to my 454 during hunting season.

Bought the rifle (reply)

I doubt anything new is brass cartridges will bring any appreciatable improvement over the 375H&H.. Many have tried, named it something else added bullet improvements ran new add campaigns, added different stocks, muzzle brakes, and other so called improvements. It still remains a solid first place in medium bores. Good for varmints to Eland. IMNSHO
I have owned five in in Mod 70 over the years. Custom Grade, I cut the bbls to 20", put 3 leaf express rear sight ramp front and good to go in thick brush or medium field range (200yds
Long live the 375 H&H

Bought the rifle

Now the shopping for a scope begins, I don't think my budget is going to bear the Leupold 2.5-8x36 I would like, so I am looking at just about every maker out there. I'm sure the 375 Ruger will generate just a leetle recoil, so it had better be tough. Much as I like the Grand Old H&H, I am really stoked about playing with the new kid on the block, from what I have read, it is a superlative cast bullet shooter.
