The first handgun I ever shot was a 999. The family was visting in Iowa and my dad's high school buddy lived on a farm outside of town, and he let me chase a can down the road with his 999. Loved those guns ever since.

Don't know much... (reply)

The 999 was the final design for that pistol. It was preceded by the Sportsman, the Model 199 (SA only I believe) and an even earlier model whose name escapes me at the moment. There is a fella who used to run around the forums by the handle of "B. Goforth"---I believe his name was Brian Goforth. He likely knows more about these that anyone and put out a book here a few years back.

My Sportsman dates to 1938/39. It is cosmetically challenged but shoots just fine, thank you.

me too! looked for reasonable priced one and finally (reply)

found two of them recently -- one made in 1962, the other in 1984, and both nearly new. and both at good prices. they are hard to find below 500$ but got these out of auctions in the northeast, and for a lot less. they are beautifully made revolvers!

Rob, our tastes run very parallel on many of these things dont they!

Boge, i may have a line on another at a good price, if i do i will let you know.

999 history, please..... (reply)

I also have a late model H&R Sportsman purchased shortly after they were discontinued.

I read somewhere that the late guns were made one at a time by one old guy and were truely hand fitted revolvers. When he died H&R dropped the line.

Is this true and does anyone have any other info on these cool .22s?

Thanks in advance,

Slim Pickens on H&R revolvers (reply)

west of the Mississippi. Took me 20+ years to find a 999 and it came from MA via a friend of mine. You never see them at the shows or shops, but if you go back east there are piles of 'em, especially in the northeast. Same with HS revolvers and auto's.
