'Playing Hooky' (lol) (reply)

This is that set of hooks I mentioned above:

The one at far right is a separate, spring-loaded hooker-grabber-thingy.

The three pieces to the left of that are the extensions for the other hooks.

The coin is for scale.

All very useful.

Except the Quarter, of course; it isn't worth One Thin Dime these days...

Just a guess... (reply)

But the hook is probably for fishing teeny-tiny things out of itty-bitty spaces.

I have an entire set of such hooks, with extensions, and they are among the most useful tools I own.

Anyway, just a thought.

Gingher 'Pocket' Scissors: A Brief Review (reply)

I've carried a Victorinox Champion since the 1970's.I retired the first one for sentimental reasons. The second was a gift from the ex, so I sold it a nreplaced it with the current version. Besides knife blades it has a scissors, small pliers, several screwdrivers, and a hook for some unknown (to me at least) purpose.

One more thing about the Spyderco 'Jess Horn'... (reply)

It's probably obvious, but lacking the trademark hole in the blade, the Spyderco C27s aren't 'one-handed' folders. (Er, openers...)

It can be done, but it's in the nature of a stunt: Opening the blade with only the thumb requires a lot of pressure against the thumb notch.

Instead, I always open mine using both hands, pretty much like one would a normal slip-joint knife. It's easier and safer, and it precludes over-stressing the pivot by side-loading it.

Here's another C27P pic, this time with the blade OPEN. (reply)

One thing I like about this particular Spydie is the blade has a proper choil. Why so many models don't has always been a mystery to me. My other favorite and usual EDC is the original C75P "Kiwi" which also has a choil.

Another reason I like the Kiwi so much is that it neatly fits in the watch pocket of my jeans. It also has a jigged bone handle, which is probably my favorite type on pocket knives.

But I digress...

Here's the promised pic (with caption!):

The knife shown above is a Spyderco. (reply)

It was the product of one of their early collaborations, this one with Jess Horn back in the early Nineties.

The model was called, simply, the "Jess Horn".

The model number was C27P (plain edge).

There was also a C27S (serrated), but I've never seen one.

I consider mine my 'BBQ' knife; I carry and use it, but only if my shirt has a collar on it.

Gingher 'Pocket' Scissors: A Brief Review (reply)

Gingher 'Pocket' Scissors: A Brief Review (reply)

Gingher scissors are very well regarded by those who do a lot of work with textiles, my Mom keeps several sets handy in her quilt room. I absolutely agree on the handiness of a good pair of scissors and always have my Leatherman Wave in my pocket which has a decent small scissor built in. My hunting kit also includes a nice set of Gerber/Fiscars shears for field dressing duties, I like them much better than a gut hook.

Gingher 'Pocket' Scissors: A Brief Review

(Figure caption added)

I have always carried a pocket knife and still do, but increasingly I find myself 'needing' a pair of scissors.

For example, when [*AHEM*] 'dining' out in the Post-Modern, Helter-Skelter world of Food Circus, one increasingly runs into those little packets of condiminiments, which in turn were no doubt foisted upon us, the Utterly Unknowing, by someone really mean.

Enter the Gingher 4-inch Backwinder's Textile Scissors, recently acquired from Overstock.com via FleaBay:

Gingher 'Pocket' Scissors with Spyderco 'Jess Horn' (C27P)

A little spendy, perhaps, at $15.00 (shipped), but they've proven to be worth every penny to me.

They're also quite sturdy for their size and otherwise very well made.

I think I can expect to get a lot more good use out of them.
