The .223 is indeed a very 'efficient' cartridge. (reply)

Has worked just fine for finely bones thin skinned animals under 100 kilos for over 50 years....

Even better now with modern high preformance bullets.

The .223 is indeed a very 'efficient' cartridge. (reply)

Up to its limits, of course, which are subject to 'debate'.

To stay on-topic, I would just say the .223 worked perfectly well for me as a varmint cartridge, but my hunting was mostly at short ranges (40 or 50 yards was a 'long' shot), and it was almost all fairly 'quick', offhand shooting.

The ~6-lb Colt Lightweight Sporter that I used was almost perfect for this, at least for a 'long' gun (it had a 16-inch barrel), so I'm all for hunting with the AR platform.

I also tried a 24-inch, heavy-barreled Colt AR, and although it was very accurate, it was really much too heavy and cumbersome for 'field' work, so I went back to the Lightweight.

Or a sixgun.

I bought a Rossi 357 carbine and a mini 14 last year (reply)

If I had known I was going to buy the mini, I probably shouldn't have bought the Rossi. The Rossi is still a lot of fun though and in the burbs probably better for defense. Also justified it as my son's first deer rifle.

...use. It dawned on me that most of my arsenal is a bit much for people who aren't full-grown men yet. It may, however, get tested on a critter or two while we're waiting for Henry to grow into it.

More or less how I ended up with a 7.62x39 rifle (reply)

Never too interested in the cartridge. BUT, put it in a '98 Mauser and slap a low-buck tag on it and I'm yer huckleberry!

It's fun, cheap and, uhh, oh yeah, "for the grandkids!", yeah, that's right.

Hope you get your aches and troubles fixed up. It's no fun ailin'.

No need to justify it; they are handy little carbines. (reply)

No doubt the versatility of the AR will keep growing. With Uppers being unregulated and having an ever growing assortment of calibers you essentially have a platform for all future needs in a rifle. A magazine fed Semi auto T/C Contender.

Self Justification

So I have been trying to justify to myself why I bought an AR, never been overly fond of them, much prefer my levers, bolts and single shots. It has come to me though, that one glowing point in favor is economy. I have one other 22 caliber centerfire, it is a 22-250, when I look at the performance of the .223 when compared to the amount of powder burned, and then look at the 22-250, I begin to wonder why I didn't pick up a bolt action .223. I will still take a bolt, or a lever, or a Ruger #1 over an AR, but I am feeling better about owning one, it may make a first class varmint gun in the long run.

Dave

Been out sick, and am finally on the mend, going to be searching for a good chiropractor next.
