Sierra 165 gr BTSP's. What I liked about these projectiles is you could eat right up to the hole and not have to cut away and toss bloodtainted meat. Use same bullet in 308Norma for same results on elk. '06 on muley's and antelope.

Best Value .30-06 SP bullet for reloading (reply)

never was a big fan of ww powerpoints but got a box of 500 of them pretty cheap and have shot quite a few deer with them. they preform great and the funny thing is two of my .30s love them. One is my ar10 and the other is my sps rem. Both shoot that bullet well under an inch at a 100 yards for 5 shots. the o6 sps does closer to 1/2 inch!

Being a cheap so-and-so for many years now.... (reply)

I've shot a lot of Hornady and Speer bullets. They both work. Remington Core-Lokt work also. I do see core separation now and again with each.....but it's always from a dead critter so I can't say it's a bad thing.

If I were out to pick up something, I'd likely come home with the Hornady 165gr plain base Interlock for the '06. For irrational reasons, I prefer 165-180 for the '06 and 150 and under for the .308---for what it's worth.

Also had good success in Son No. 1's rifle using Rem 180gr RN---hogs and deer.

Well... since "cheap" seems to be the operative word, (reply)

and since I agree high dollar premium bullets aren't necessary to shoot a whitetial through the ribs with an '06 at reasonable ranges, just about any bullet will suffice.

I will also throw this out - you can't get any cheaper than cast. Something like a Lyman 311284 over a caseful of WC872 will give results.

"Cheap components" is the definition of oxymoron these days. Likely to be more a case of "what do you have in stock" and unfortunately that is likely to be the expensive stuff.

Haven't priced them in a while... (reply)

but I really like the Hornady 165 gr BTSP. It is capable of one hole accuracy at 100 yards out of my old P17. I loaded up a box (50 rounds) of them late last fall over a snort of 760, 4895 would do good too I suspect but my best load was found with 760 and I've never seen a reason to change it. Now to get the rifle rebedded so I can shoot them next time up north... I'd like to get it pillar bedded but haven't found any kits for the P17 and can't afford to pay some fancy gunsmith to do it. But I digress, as usual.

Best Value .30-06 SP bullet for reloading

For those of you who put up the occasional box of .30-06 reloads for deer hunting... if you were to buy bulk bullets today for that purpose, which would you choose?

I was thinking of your basic 150-grain PSP spitzer, though a 165 isn't out of the question either. Not interested in Nosler Partitions, Barnes X or other premium bullets, as I find that a Winchester silver tip or equivalent seems to do a dandy job on these little NC whitetails.

The load will probably involve either IMR 4895 or (more likely) IMR 4350. Not really interested in breaking new ground here.

Who's got a good price on what I'm looking for?

-AaronB
