More range time with the CCU....

by Gunner ⌂ @, St Louis, Sunday, August 02, 2020, 19:54 (48 days ago)

Got back to the range to do some accuracy testing with the 45 CCU.....first off let me say I suck doing group shooting with a red dot sight, with my eyes I see 3-6 dots and at times they change positions, sometimes they are in a circle sometimes in a triangle pattern, very hard to shoot tight groups with it but I wanted a RDS for plinking and something easy for family members to shoot with. Maybe down the road I will mount a low power scope and do more testing as it seems to be very accurate.

I shot my usual 45 load, 6.1 grs 231 under a Sierra 185 JHP and 185gr LSWC....

The little unit is fun to shoot and accurate, even with the RDS and my eyes and fully believe it would shoot under one inch with a decent scope mounted on it.

I also installed a mini high rise mount from UTG, SOOOO much better, now I don't have to cram my face into the tube body to see the dot, much more relaxed and comfortable position now.

So far the unit has been very reliable, only two hicups, FTE's, and that was with my bad ammo. Had some ammo loaded with old powder that was left in the hopper too long and the loads are a little on the weak side. With normal power load the CCU has been 100%.

25 yards?

by bj @, Sunday, August 02, 2020, 20:04 (48 days ago) @ Gunner

assume you are doing this at 25 yards?

Should be 100. Most get 1"-2" MOA depending on ammo NT

.

Meant to type 1"-3". NRA got circa 1.75-2.75 with SIG ammo.

V-crown, to be exact. Quite a few posters with scope have hit about 1". Many of the units will truly shoot.

Yes, with a scope I will move it back yo 50, no need for farther range.

Well there's 10mm...

by bj @, Wednesday, August 05, 2020, 20:02 (45 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

And if you can get 10mm then maybe rechamber it for 10mm magnum.
But if you could do that then you could get the .45ACP and rechamber it for .45 Win Mag

The biggest problem with either of those, or .41mag for that matter, is what gripframe would you use to mate it to. Maybe it could be adapted from the LAR Grizzly.

The next obstacle with a significant increase in power is how high can you go with a straight blowback action? Is there enough mass and spring there or can it be beefed up a bit?

I like to ponder these kinds of things.

I was just teasing. If you need more power than a .45 ACP

Get a rifle.

Guess I can stop looking for that .41 Mag Glock now. NT

an aftermarket barrel and good loads will get you close

by bj @, Sunday, August 16, 2020, 19:57 (34 days ago) @ guest

But for that matter you can get a conversion for .460Rowland and get all the power you could want.

They do .45 Super and .460 Rowland. NT

41 magnum......WHAT-

by Gunner ⌂ @, St Louis, Thursday, August 06, 2020, 17:40 (44 days ago) @ Rob Leahy

Nah, that's what the Marlin 1894 FG is for, it is just fine as a 45 acp, nice, easy compact plinker that doesn't blow your ear's out : )

If I want a THUMP I bring out the 416 Ruger Alaskan, that will put a hurt on anything.

41 magnum......WHAT-

by bj @, Thursday, August 06, 2020, 19:05 (44 days ago) @ Gunner

That was my first thought too- Marlin 1894. But I thought it was pretty far from an auto carbine so I refrained.

I also thought if you want an automatic carbine with more power than .45ACP gets from a long barrel, there are various larger bore options available for the AR platform.

Nicely done, Gunner. That is a nice looking rig, too.

Nice shooting with a dot. Those are my 50yd groups w/dot. NT

They make a red dot target like the black ones you used that are Green with a white 10 ring that the red dot settles in very well. Look up red dot sight in targets.[image]

Promising.

Dots are never sharp for me but fortunately never plural either.

A red dot looks like a fuzzy comma to me. Ntxt

RDS fuzz......

by Gunner ⌂ @, St Louis, Thursday, August 06, 2020, 17:42 (44 days ago) @ Hoot

Fuzz I can deal with but multiable dots and that they change pattern is a BIG problem.
