Leaving the Peoples Republic of Washington for Idaho

I've got family up in WA. Some in King County, others further north and some on the dry side of the Cascades as well. I've long wondered what keeps them there as they're in the minority as far as outlook on life goes. But as you noted, it's not easy to pick up and move after a life time spent in one place.
