From the Sixgunner.Com files ... The .41 Magnum - Misnamed!

And...

The term "Magnum" means the original factory police load, which I recall as being a 200 at 900 ft/sec, has been forgotten. That's a shame, a cartridge with pretty much those exact ballistics, in a modern double action revolver, would be useful for a LOT besides police work.

Yes, I know handloaders can duplicate it pretty easily. What percentage of shooters are handloaders?

I have a slightly scabby NMBH 6.5" I ended up with after a coworker defaulted on a $245 payday loan. I don't shoot it great deal, but it's still on my short list of keepers. I've never found, to my inexperienced perceptions, that it kicks much less than a .44 Mag, both loaded to full factory equivalence. But it shoots right flat, even out of revolver.

I agree, it's a darn shame it was named what it was named.
